What a group trip costs, worked through

Group Trip Cost is for the trip where nobody starts in the same place. One price per person cannot describe it: one family drives, another flies, and everyone shares the house. So each destination gets one total for the whole group — every party’s own travel, the lodging they share and their daily spending — and the destinations are ranked on that total against travel time.

Eight people, three cities, a week in Destin

Four from Chicago, two from Atlanta and two from Denver, seven nights in July. A place for eight runs about $6,480 for the week and food about $4,540 — $1,380 a head before anyone travels. Chicago flies by default, but driving would save $396 — at 14.7 hours each way, which is the kind of trade the calculator lays out rather than decides. Atlanta drives: one car at $460 beats two plane seats at $784. Denver flies: two plane seats at $956 against $2,039 and 21.7 hours each way by car.

Altogether about $14,200, or $1,770 a person — but not the same for everyone. With the house and food split per head, it comes to about $1,610 a person from Atlanta and $1,860 from Denver.

Why a bigger group is not simply cheaper per head

A house sleeping eight costs about 2.7 times one sleeping four, because the step from four to eight usually means a bigger class of property. In Destin that puts a night at $86 a person for four, $116 for eight and $106 for twelve. The calculator scales lodging on that curve rather than charging per head. How the figures are made.

The month matters too

Destin’s lodging swings 142% between January and June for the same house. Set dates and the calculator prices the month you travel; leave them blank and it uses July.
